This is what they call déjà vu.

The very afternoon at work on wednesday, after reading this in the morning at home, I was handed a case file about a couple who has decided to commence legal action against a company which tried (and successfully did) to sell them time-share holiday membership at resort destinations across the world. The case documents didn't help much to satiate my curiosity about what their mystery gift was but managed to reveal that they had foregone their gift to get $1,000 off their membership (as claimed to be bargained down from $20,000 to $9,000). In short, no canberra (camera) and worse, they had to fork out money some more!

As if this isn't obvious enough already, the couple only got suspicious after more than three years (of monthly installments!) when the company contacted them to upgrade their membership. While we can try to help the couple on grounds such as fraudulent misrepresentation, duress, undue influence and deceit, they were the ones who were willing signatories to the agreement (with quite a few terms not to their advantage). A word of advice to all potentially gullible people out there, remember there is no free lunch in this world, and definitely no free canberras too (whatever their mystery gift was).
