Vanity fair doesn't get any more shallow than this.

After catching the last few minutes of the bradford-firing episode in the apprentice (search for the link made me realize my local network is one season behind), I'd watched an accidental episode of style star featuring favorite goddess Jennifer lopez. A bad move, especially at the concluding bits where some cosmetic products were introduced in the "how to achieve that look" segment. No prizes for guessing how fast the leap from tv couch to laptop seat was, and how one thing led to another.

1. Juicy tube spring fling flavor - the initial reason why I browse the site

2. Color dose lips and cheeks - something that caught my eye, somewhat the rich cousin of my body shop lip and cheek stain

3. Vitabolic oil-free deep radiance booster - I have enough of hearing complaints from mom, I think I really need this in addition to the mandatory catching-up on sleep

My only hesitation, a wallet that cannot afford all of these, which also begs the question on skincare items (note: not cosmetics). For all their preventive goodness to combat ageing and wrinkling, I doubt I can afford them at these vital pre-emptive stages. I really can't, not now.

Of guilt and gratitude.

There comes various moments in life when you feel indebted to your friends (and their respective mr boyfriend), a sense of gratitude that isn't mere thanking the lucky stars, but that you are blessed to have them as good friends and also being able to identify the true characters of the ones who aren't. Yesterday was one such defining moment. Incidentally, I felt a sudden surge of loneliness too.

Soon it will not only be in dreams that I can hide behind chunky gucci glasses.

Contrary to popular belief, my rivers cuomo-inspired fascination wit geek glasses isn't just another passing phase. As can be seen, I'm now all endeavored to move it up to another level. In class today, Riccardo wore geek glasses instead of his usual gold-rims. I can't help but compliment him on the good taste.

Almost freaky.

I've been forewarned by J of a potentially unhealthy fixation with tabasco® pepper sauce. For weeks I have been craving linguini in spicy tomato herb sauce, delicious slurpy food on its own, and also because it does go so very well wit the said sauce. Yesterday I had bought my very own bottle at the convenience store near my place and ended up sprinkling it on my fried rice tonight. I am currently considering keeping it in my bag, somewhat like my quintessential liquid blush and lip moisturizer.

Art class field trip to S.a.m. - Looking for someone to buy me the below print.

He brought us around his own exhibition, cracked jokes, took a picture with us and then took a picture for us. Watch this space, the man is such an inspiration!

P.s There wasn't enough time to view all his exhibits in detail, I want to go back again one of these days. Who's in?

Party @469 ("Hey hip and happening name for a school." Insert comment.)

Monday was patron's day. Like any half-decent undergraduate, this made up good enough an excuse to party, imbibe and pretend it was our very own party-in-the-park. School authorities-wise, it was good excuse to splurge on fancy white posh tents, get media attention and invite (euphemism for pay) idols to grace the event.

Like I said, wit a 15% fee hike, anything can happen. My take on the matter, none too serious, is that from now on, this can be the ubiquitous comment in quite a number of conversations that involve anyone impressed wit our school -

"How come you guys get to use msn on laptops during class?" Insert comment.

"So cool, the city campus." Insert comment.

"Wah, what funny professors you have." Insert comment.

"Tiger beer on tap for free on campus?" Insert comment.

"Eh I also want to meet simon tay and russel wong." Insert comment.

Anyhow back to monday, I have to agree wit E that it was one of the funniest and most enjoyable days wit the girls. Shereen and shyn were great on stage, wit shereen announcing our presence (her two best screaming mates/fans) to the crowd and shyn looking extraordinarily vampy in typical spg format. Bratwurst and mashed potato, adam road nasi lemak and smuggled tipple, zouk drum guy and great crowd, not to mention dancing security guards too.. the night couldn't have gotten any better in a post-colonial setting. Oh, yes it could have, if only E wasn't so busy growing her adam's apples. And don't remind me about J's could-have-been - a brand new cellphone, now gone.

Sniffily, sneezily, I caught a cold this afternoon on my way out.

Having not alot of time to sit down write a thoughtful commentary on political events or some everyday observations (especially when I'm being bugged all the time to clean up my act), here's a link to a place I'd regretted not going to when I was in beijing last august. And since I'm on the topic, I might as well throw in this one as well.

Late nights seem an increasing inevitability, no!

So tired I am putting off partying, and just about to head to bed after compiling a list of prominent women in business for an upcoming event as well as an accidental viewing of a harrowing episode of some Jerry bruckheimer series. I like to be surprised by great stuff on tv, totally unanticipated. Anyway I now got to try getting up at 0600hrs tomorrow, long day ahead and and I don't want to be late again.

The lack of discipline, I blame it on Mindef.

Not that I am getting most of my work completed, rather to the contrary, yet I seem to be sleeping too little these days. I am perpetually in need of sleep. Over lunch at serene centre macs last saturday, T commented that I look haggard, wit eyebags (!!) and am not radiant (some blush should do the trick for now). I guess I ought to go to bed earlier and manage my time better, both of which are long overdue commitments. I've got tonnes of backlog to clear, either tasks I've delayed dealing wit for months or a procrastinating list of current responsibilities, and not to mention a room to clean up (piles of displaced books on floor) in the face of ticking seconds towards the evil chinese new year, an event which also begets an annual windows cleaning contribution to my family's festive springcleaning. For the record too, I haven't been reaching my classes on time since school started. This is getting way out of hand, and plenty of other things too, all within my presumed jurisdiction. High time to buck up, yes I suppose!

I think I would look good in waitressy green.

All thanks to the indonesian girl, a catherine look-alike, who'd just returned from her scandinavian siesta, we went to D's for a long-anticipated hearty peranakan dinner. A pity he wasn't cooking, tonight D was waiting on tables, clearing tables, taking orders, juggling dishes and claypots the entire time we were there as we dug into delicious servings of nasi kuning, sambal kangkong, ayam buah keluak, honey pork and ikan masak assam pedas. Thumbs up for the fresh lime juice which is a refreshing thirst quencher, not too sweet just perfect. Finishing off the meal, I can't say I like the local desserts as much though because I find them overly sweet; too bad I'm not blessed wit a sweet tooth like J and gang, heh. So well, D you've got me hooked on peranakan delicacies. We'll be back, but you have to cook for us following round!

P.s. Next up in restaurant reviews, we have The marmalade pantry as soon as I can afford it.

Remarks: Not conclusive (Something nibbles at me sometimes).

It could be a universal truth - that family and self remain one's top priorities in life. But for you to say it out explicitly in that very instance to one specific audience allows me to see how much you value our friendship all your friendships. So blatant it wipes everything else clean, so blunt it strangely creeps back everytime you are nice or when I want to share with you important events/ realizations that matter to me (because to me you are were more than just a passing acquaintance you are were someone I could trust), that voice your voice so matter-of-factly so devoid of feelings talks to me once more pulls me back reminds me that when it boils down to the basics, I am but negligible nothing at all.

Colonial and native.

Unlike most of us, some people have to carry the weight of history on their shoulders. And extremely puzzling too on why his brother chose to dress up as a lion.

First encounter.

Says riccardo, "I am the sweetest person on this planet, on both sides of the equator.. depending if I am travelling or not."

This is just the beginning, I think I can forgive this italian for the lack of the promised song and dance during class.

Tug tugging in all directions.

86 says I can use this as a wallpaper if I want to. Posted by Hello

Most people would have picked the first, but I like this one the most from the lot of samples he'd sent me. Posted by Hello

Wit pics like these, he definitely got me sold on the a80. While it is true that I'd been promised a digicam for my twenty-first birthday as long as I can make up my mind on the camera of choice, I cannot find the heart most times to demand the long-delayed present from my parents who are working hard to pay for the bills/ my ridiculously-priced textbooks/ household expenditures/ our weekly allowances/ miscellaneous spendings of sorts. This makes it all the harder to find the perfect digicam (a semi-manual for the amateur enthusiast to tinker wit) because I really don't want to waste the hard-earned cash on a lousy idiot-proof type.

From The Straits Times Interactive (subscription required and archive lasting only seven days):

Refrigerated containers - which were scarce in the first few days after the disaster - have been reserved for storing Westerners' bodies only.

I know the situation warranted the action, and it did make perfect logical sense. Why then.. I can't help but acknowledge the unwitting presence of subservience. The strange aftertaste of it remains so blatant, even in death.

Let a hundred flowers bloom - Mao on youth, and a suspicious parallel spotted.

At first it seems a refreshing change in emphasis for our government's policies, almost like a You Finally Noticed Me In That Corner You Really (Really) Want To Hear What I Think revelation. Then conversations wit a friend active in aussie youth politics revealed that this is hardly something new. Ruling political parties have always noted the potential in the future of their nations, democratic or not. Try replacing time- and situation- specific words in the below quotes, voila! do you not see Mcys lurking suspiciously somewhere in there?

In view of my recent participation in various college major-unrelated youth activities that tinker wit policy-making national issues, mom has unrelentlessly cautioned me against any (potential) interest in joining the local opposition whenever I try bringing up any contentious topic. When does intellectual banter and stimulating discussion cross the fine line to dissident opinions that mainstream propaganda has so tirelessly labelled oppositionist?

The world is yours, as well as ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours. You young people, full of vigor and vitality, are in the bloom of life, like the sun at eight or nine in the morning. Our hope is placed on you. The world belongs to you. China's future belongs to you.

Talk at a meeting with Chinese students and trainees in Moscow (November 17, 1957).

The new Government headed by PM Lee Hsien Loong has sent a clear signal that it wants greater participation from the youths in shaping Singapore's future. He has called on younger Singaporeans to "step forward to make a difference to yourselves, to your fellow citizens and to Singapore" to shape our future together. (Source)

The young people are the most active and vital force in society. They are the most eager to learn and the least conservative in their thinking. This is especially so in the era of socialism. We hope that the local Party organizations in various places will help and work with the Youth League organizations and go into the question of bringing into full play the energy of our youth in particular. The Party organizations should not treat them in the same way as everybody else and ignore their special characteristics. Of course, the young people should learn from the old and other adults, and should strive as much as possible to engage in all sorts of useful activities with their agreement.

Introductory note to "A Youth Shock Brigade of the No. 9 Agricultural Producers' Co-operative in Hsinping Township, Chungshan County" (1955), The Socialist Upsurge in China's Countryside, Chinese ed., Vol. III.

The renamed Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports will play a more active role in formulating programmes and working with other ministries to tap the energy, passion and idealism of these young Singaporeans. (Source)

Apart from continuing to act in co-ordination with the Party in its central task, the Youth League should do its own work to suit the special characteristics of youth. New China must care for her youth and show concern for the growth of the younger generation. Young people have to study and work, but they are at the age of physical growth. Therefore, full attention must be paid both to their work and study and to their recreation, sport and rest.

Talk at the reception for the Presidium of the Second National Congress of the Youth League (June 30, 1953).

MCYS will evaluate the needs, opportunities and resources in the youth sector. The contributions from our young people will help shape the framework for youth in Singapore, and will form the basis for the future programmes of the MCYS, National Youth Council and the various youth organisations in Singapore. (Source)

Our concern should extend to non-Party cadres as well as to Party cadres. There are many capable people outside the Party whom we must not ignore. The duty of every Communist is to rid himself of aloofness and arrogance and to work well with non-Party cadres, give them sincere help, have a warm, comradely attitude towards them and enlist their initiative in the great cause of resisting Japan and reconstructing the nation.

"The Role of the Chinese Communist Party in the National War" (October 1938), Selected Works, Vol. II, p. 202.

The trust, respect and commitment of the younger generation would come from a greater sense of shared ownership in nation building. This would be achieved through more consultation and consensus building, and allowing greater involvement and participation in policy formulation. (Source)

Discovery channel.

1. I totally dig the new Dbs platinum mastercard ad. It's gorgeous and sweet. I am looking forward to viewing it in between shows more so than the tv programs I am supposed to be watching.

2. One of my former students from my relief teaching days recently joined a scheme offered by my school that allows him to take up a module and join the priority admission list if he does well in the module. This adds a whole new dimension to our once- teacher/student relationship to the current student/student level. Alas, if only I had harbored ill intentions then, for the present situation would suggest an acceptance of a previously-illicit relationship. My most memorable impression of him remains that of a slacker who did not hand in assignments on a frequent basis; even I grew tired of hearing myself nag at him day after day.

It is always a blast in bombay; we never know what comes next!

First week of the brand new school term is officially over, I've got nothing much to complain about my classes other than the upscale prices of most of my textbooks. Seems like I've got a thing for expensive things since all the classes that require overpriced texts are electives, meaning I'm the only one among my friends who'd actually chosen to attend them. Earlier in the week, reading some law and international business notes on the train had warranted a funny unsolicited conversation wit a black guy, probably tourist. I guess blacks are some of the friendliest people around (even the Wassup, baby? twosome, albeit hitting on a wrong note), incredulously misunderstood by the locals, who true to their nature, form some of the most race-judgmental people in the region and likely the world over.

Mediawhoring becoming habitual of late.

I have to admit I do derive some (healthy or unhealthy?) doses of cheap thrill from seeing myself in the papers. While I'm on the topic, I also have to admit that I've yet to submit my first article due to an extremely bad case of writer's block. Help!

Meeting pap's posterboy again.

The launch at Sph went really well, the newsroom tour and interaction wit the management/minister were extremely enjoyable, insights aplenty. What's worthy to note is that for the first time, I've actually felt that the minister does make sense in what he says (only at this one juncture I must emphasize!) - that the casino issue deals fundamentally wit individuals' concepts expectations of our home/ society/ future and is more about getting the process right than fixation wit the end result; winning civic trust will strengthen us as a nation, that being the current challenge the government is facing. No I am not becoming a yes man (or woman). I still think he churns out party propaganda routinely, which I am definitely not agreeable wit and which he still coyly avoids when queried. Almost certainly, I believe he lacks the sincerity a good politician should possess; his eyes give him away. That is, without a doubt.

Help the von rodas help the sri lankans.

The account is finally up, do spread the good news. I am attesting that this is a genuine effort, the money donated will be put to appropriate use more quickly/timely than via other very-highly publicized channels.
